Carolyn Bryant, also known as Carolyn Bryant Donham, is a woman who was involved in one of the most significant events of the civil rights movement in the United States. In 1955, Carolyn Bryant accused Emmett Till, a 14-year-old African American boy, of making advances towards her in a store in Money, Mississippi. This accusation ultimately led to Till’s brutal murder by a group of white men.
Years later, in 2017, Carolyn Bryant admitted to author Timothy Tyson that she had fabricated parts of her testimony during Till’s trial. She revealed that Till had not made any inappropriate advances towards her. This revelation shed light on the injustice and racial violence that African Americans faced during that era.
The case of Emmett Till became a catalyst for the civil rights movement, as the brutality and injustice inflicted upon him sparked outrage and a renewed determination to fight for racial equality.
