American actor, singer, and soldier Audie Leon Murphy was born on June 20, 1925, and died on May 28, 1971. During World War II, he was one of the few American combat troopers to get multiple medals. In addition to the highest honors bestowed by the United States Army, he was honored for his bravery on the battlefield with decorations from France and Belgium. At the Colmar Pocket in France in January 1945, a 19-year-old Murphy single-handedly held off a company of German forces for an hour before leading a successful counterattack while wounded and out of ammo, earning him the Medal of Honor.

In Hunt County, Texas, where Murphy was born, he joined a big family of sharecroppers. His mother passed away while he was a young adult, and his father had already abandoned the family. Murphy dropped out of school in the fifth grade to harvest cotton and earn money for his family. He also learned to use a hunting rifle, which he used to provide for them.

In order to serve in the military after Pearl Harbor was attacked in 1941, Murphy had his older sister assist him forge his birth certificate. The Army accepted him after the Army, Navy, and Marines all rejected him due to his low weight. His first taste of battle came in 1943, during the Allied invasion of Sicily; in 1944, he fought in the Battle of Anzio, helped free Rome, and took part in the invasion of southern France. Murphy fought in the battle of Montélimar, and in October he led his troops in an attack on the L’Omet quarry, located northeast of Cleurie, France.
