Eve Arden, whose birth name was Eunice Mary Quedens, was an actress from the United States. She appeared in films, on the radio, on stage, and on television. She has been performing in both leading and supporting roles for almost sixty years.

Arden started her film career in 1929 and also performed on Broadway in the early 1930s. One of her notable early roles was in the RKO Radio Pictures drama called Stage Door (1937), where she acted alongside Katharine Hepburn. She then went on to appear in comedies like Having Wonderful Time (1938) and the Marx Brothers’ At the Circus (1939). She was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Mildred Pierce (1945).

It’s quite surprising, considering Arden’s elegance and cleverness, that she had a notable presence in several films noir. Some of these films were even quite well-known, such as Mildred Pierce, The Unfaithful (1947), The Arnelo Affair (1947), Whiplash (1948), and Anatomy of a Murder (1959).

Arden later transitioned to television, where she portrayed a witty and captivating high school teacher in Our Miss Brooks. Her performance in the show earned her the distinction of winning the very first Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. In addition, she portrayed the role of the school principal in the film musicals Grease (1978) and Grease 2 (1982).
