Charles Dickens, the famed 19th-century English novelist and social critic, had ten children with his wife, Catherine Hogarth. Here’s a list of their children:

Mary Angela Dickens (1838-1896): Known as Mamie, she was very close to her father and lived with him until his death.

Kate Macready Dickens (1839-1929): Later known as Kate Perugini after marriage, she was a painter and had a moderately successful career as an artist.

Walter Landor Dickens (1841-1863): He joined the British Indian Army and died young in India.

Francis Jeffrey Dickens (1844-1886): Known as Frank, he served in the Northwest Mounted Police in Canada.

Alfred D’Orsay Tennyson Dickens (1845-1912): Named after the famous poet Lord Alfred Tennyson, he later migrated to Australia.

Sydney Smith Haldimand Dickens (1847-1872): He joined the Royal Navy and also died relatively young.

(Sir) Henry Fielding Dickens (1849-1933): He became a barrister and later a judge. He was also knighted.

Dora Annie Dickens (1850-1851): Sadly, Dora died in infancy.

Edward Bulwer Lytton Dickens (1852-1902): Known as Plorn, he migrated to Australia and pursued various careers.

Dickens’s relationships with his children varied. Some were closer to him than others, and the stress and complexities of his family life, particularly later on, reflected in some aspects of his novels.
