Frank Lucas was an American drug lord who became well-known in the 1960s and 1970s for his participation in the illegal drug trade. He was born in La Grange, North Carolina on September 9, 1930. He grew up in a poor family in rural North Carolina.
During the 1960s, Frank Lucas made his way to Harlem, New York. He started off working as a driver and enforcer for Ellsworth “Bumpy” Johnson, who was a well-known drug dealer at the time. When Johnson passed away in 1968, Lucas saw a chance to grow his drug empire and became the leader of the Harlem drug scene.
Lucas made a major impact on the drug trade by coming up with a clever way to transport heroin from Southeast Asia to the United States. He made arrangements to smuggle pure heroin inside the coffins of deceased American soldiers who were being brought back from the Vietnam War. This enabled him to evade law enforcement and generate massive profits.
Law enforcement eventually became aware of Lucas’ criminal activities, and they arrested him in 1975. He was found guilty of multiple charges, such as drug trafficking and conspiracy, and received a prison sentence of 70 years. However, in 1981, Lucas made an agreement with the authorities where he shared information about corrupt police officers and other drug dealers. This ultimately resulted in a shorter prison sentence for him.
After serving his time in prison, Frank Lucas was released in the mid-1990s and went on to lead a rather peaceful life. He died on May 30, 2019, in Cedar Grove, New Jersey, when he was 88 years old.
