Warren Jeffs used to be the leader of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (FLDS), which is a sect that broke away from the main Mormon Church. He was born in Sacramento, California, USA on December 3, 1955.
Jeffs became well-known as the self-proclaimed prophet and leader of the FLDS after his father, Rulon Jeffs, who was the previous leader, passed away. In the early 2000s, he took charge of the sect and promptly implemented a system of strict control over its members.
Jeffs led the FLDS and they followed a practice of polygamy, which meant that men could have multiple wives. Unfortunately, this often included underage girls who were married off at a young age. He gained notoriety for orchestrating marriages between young girls and older men, which resulted in numerous accusations of child abuse and exploitation within the community.
Warren Jeffs made it onto the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list in 2006 when he managed to escape from law enforcement. In August 2006, he got arrested during a regular traffic stop in Nevada. He was found guilty in 2007 of two charges related to helping arrange the marriage between a 14-year-old girl and her adult cousin, which included being an accomplice to rape.
Jeffs was found guilty in 2011 of sexually assaulting minors and was given a life sentence, along with an additional 20 years. He is currently in a Texas prison, serving his sentence.
Many people, including mainstream Mormon leaders and the general public, strongly criticize Warren Jeffs’ leadership and actions due to the harm inflicted upon young girls and women in the FLDS community. The situation he was involved in made people pay attention to the problem of religious extremism and the misuse of power in closed-off groups.
