Her ancestry can be traced back to Germany, Ireland, and England. Gerwig is the child of Gordon Gerwig and Christine Gerwig, both of whom are also named Gerwig. She values the time she gets to spend with her parents, who play roles similar to those of the character’s parents in Frances Ha.
Her older brother is a landscape architect, and her sister is a manager for the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. She also has an older sister who works for the EEOC.
Gerwig was raised in the Unitarian Universalist faith. She received her diploma from the Sacramento, California, St. Francis High School for Catholic Girls in the year 2002.
At one point in time, she described herself as “an intense child.” Gerwig has mentioned her interest in dance at a very early age. Later on, she tried her hand at competitive fencing, but she eventually had to give it up because of the enormous costs involved.
Her original intention was to complete her education in musical theater in New York, but she ended up getting her degree in English and philosophy from Barnard College instead.
She and her roommate Kate McKinnon also took part in extracurricular activities such as the Columbia University Varsity Show. They eventually worked together on the Barbie movie adaptation of the live-action television series.
After being turned down from playwriting MFA programs, Gerwig first intended to pursue a career in playwriting. However, she ultimately decided to seek a career in acting instead. Even though she was a student at Barnard at the time, she was cast in a supporting role in Joe Swanberg’s film LOL and made a cameo in the film Baghead directed by Jay & Mark Duplass in 2006.
She began collaborating with Swanberg, and the two of them split directing duties for Nights and Weekends (2008) and co-wrote Hannah Takes the Stairs (2007). Hannah Takes the Stairs was released in 2007. Gerwig appeared alongside Rhys Ifans, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Ben Stiller, and Ben Affleck in the 2010 film Greenberg, which was directed by Noah Baumbach.
In 2010, Gerwig made her first appearance on a talk show, and it was Jimmy Kimmel Live! Between the years 2011 and 2015, she lent her voice to one of the main characters in the animated series China, IL that was broadcast on Adult Swim.
In 2011, she was selected to play the lead part in the pilot episode of The Corrections on HBO; however, the show was ultimately not picked up for a full season. Gerwig starred in the film alongside Jesse Eisenberg and Alec Baldwin.

In May of 2014, Gerwig made her debut in the theatrical world in the role of Becky in Penelope Skinner’s production of The Village Bike at New York’s Lucille Lortel Theatre. The program aired all the way up until the 30th of June. She was nominated for an Outer Critics Circle Award in the category of Best Actress as a result of her work.
When it made its debut as an official selection at the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival, Rebecca Miller’s Maggie’s Plan was met with positive praise from critics and audiences alike. Gerwig then went on to play the major role in that film.
Following her work as a co-director on the films Nights and Weekends, Greta Gerwig made her debut as a solo filmmaker in 2017 with the coming-of-age comedy-drama film Lady Bird, which she also wrote the screenplay for.
At the 75th Golden Globe Awards, Lady Bird received nominations for Best Supporting Actress for Laurie Metcalf and Best Screenplay for Greta Gerwig. However, the film ultimately won the award for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, while Saoirse Ronan took home the award for Best Actress – Musical or Comedy.
At the 90th Academy Awards, it was recognized with nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay for Gerwig. Additionally, it was recognized with nods for Best Actress for Ronan and Best Supporting Actress for Metcalf.
After the critical and commercial success of Lady Bird, Greta Gerwig earned a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature in 2018 for her work on Wes Anderson’s stop-motion animated film Isle of Dogs, which had its world premiere at the 68th Berlin International Film Festival and was met with acclaim from the festival’s audience and critics alike.
In June of 2018, it was disclosed that Gerwig, who had been recruited to write the script for a new film adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s book Little Women, would also be directing it. The book was adapted from Louisa May Alcott’s novel of the same name.
Adam Driver and Greta Gerwig will share a screen together in the next film adaptation of Don DeLillo’s book of the same name, titled White Noise, which will be directed by Noah Baumbach. The film will serve as the centerpiece of the 60th New York Film Festival as well as the 79th Venice International Film Festival. It will be made available on a streaming service in the latter half of 2022.
