John Wesley Dean III, born on October 14, 1938, is an American attorney. He held the position of White House Counsel for U.S. President Richard Nixon from July 1970 to April 1973. After he admitted his guilt to one felony charge, he made a deal with the prosecution to testify as a crucial witness. As a result, he received a shorter sentence, which he served at Fort Holabird near Baltimore, Maryland. He was disbarred after making his plea.
After the Watergate hearings, Dean decided to share his experiences by writing a series of books. He also went on a tour across the United States to give lectures about his firsthand accounts. Afterwards, he pursued a career as a commentator on current political events, wrote books, and became a columnist for FindLaw’s Writ.
Dean used to support Goldwater conservatism, but he eventually changed his views and started criticizing the Republican Party. Dean has expressed strong criticism towards the party’s endorsement of Presidents George W. Bush and Donald Trump, as well as their stance on neoconservatism, excessive executive power, mass surveillance, and the Iraq War.
