Who is Steve Bannon?
As chief strategist for the first seven months of Trump’s presidency, American Stephen Kevin Bannon was a media executive, political strategist, and former investment banker.
He served as an officer in the United States Navy and worked for Goldman Sachs before branching out into other endeavors like executive producing films in Hollywood and helping to start the conservative news website Breitbart News.
After leading Trump’s presidential campaign in 2016 as its chief executive officer, Bannon became the president’s chief strategist and senior counselor. But he ultimately decided to return to Breitbart and quit his job. He has been associated with populist conservative political groups around the world and is known for backing upstart candidates in Republican primaries.
When the candidate Bannon backed for the Senate in Alabama, Roy Moore, failed in 2017, it cast doubt on Bannon’s credibility as a political strategist. In August of 2020, Bannon will be arrested on federal conspiracy to conduct mail fraud and money laundering charges connected to the We Build the Wall fundraising drive. Trump pardoned him on his last day in office despite his not-guilty plea. However, in September 2022, Bannon faced charges of fraud, money laundering, and conspiracy in a New York state court related to the same campaign. He has also been punished online; in November of 2020, he will have permanent access to Twitter revoked since he suggested the execution of government officials.
For failing to comply with a subpoena issued by the Select Committee on the January 6 Attack, Bannon was found in contempt of Congress in October 2021 and indicted by a federal grand jury on two criminal charges of contempt of Congress.
In a July 2022 jury trial, he was found guilty on both counts and given a four-month prison term and a fine. He has been granted a stay of execution while he appeals his conviction and sentence.
