Melanie Elizabeth Wilson, better known by her stage name Rebel Wilson, is an Australian actress, comedian, writer, singer, and producer. Wilson began her acting career in 2003, after she had graduated from the Australian Theatre for Young People, playing the role of Toula in the SBS comedy series Pizza. Next, she was seen on The Wedge, a sketch comedy show.
Wilson grew up in and around the Sydney areas of Castle Hill, Parramatta, and Kenthurst. She attended Tara Anglican School for Girls, a coed boarding school in its own right. She graduated from high school in 1997 with a perfect score (99.3) and a state-ranking second place finish in Food Technology.
Wilson joined the debate team after being encouraged to do so by a teacher; she credits Tournament of Minds with helping her come out of her shell.
Wilson worked at a Castle Hill theater when she was younger, but she left after she became a household name thanks to the release of her first film, Fat Pizza.
Wilson’s comedic performances When You’re Expecting a Baby, What to Expect, After the success of her 2012 films Struck by Lightning and Bachelorette, she was named one of Variety’s “Top 10 Comedians to Watch for 2013.”
For her role as Fat Amy in the Pitch Perfect film series (2012-2017), she was nominated for and won several awards. These include the MTV Movie Award for Best Breakthrough Performance and the Teen Choice Award for Favorite Movie Actress.
In 2016, she was in the films Grimsby and How to Be Single.
Wilson wrote and acted in the ABC sitcom Super Fun Night (2013), which aired for a single season. In 2019, she made an appearance in The Hustle as Penny Rust and in Cats as Jennyanydots. She made her debut as a leading actress in the 2019 film Isn’t That Romantic.
Wilson’s performance as Fraulein Rahm in the 2019 movie Jojo Rabbit earned him a nomination for a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Film.
