He drove a Plymouth in the Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway.
Petty achieved his first NASCAR Cup Series victory in 1960 at the Charlotte Motor Speedway. He was behind the wheel of a 1959 Oldsmobile at the time. He managed to win two races during that season and ended up in seventh place in the championship standings.
