Roberto Carlos da Silva Rocha, born on April 10, 1973, is a former professional footballer from Brazil. He is commonly known as Roberto Carlos, and sometimes referred to as RC3. Nowadays, he works as a football ambassador. He began his career in Brazil as a forward, but later on, he primarily played as a left-back. Many people have referred to him as the “most attack-oriented left-back ever seen in the sport.” Throughout his career, he has been known for his exceptional ability to take free kicks. His shots, which have an impressive bend to them, have been recorded at speeds exceeding 169 km/h (105 mph). He came in second place in the FIFA World Player of the Year competition in 1997. He is widely regarded as one of the best full-backs in history. In 2004, Pelé included him in the FIFA 100 list, which recognizes the greatest living players in the world.
Roberto Carlos had a successful career at the club level. He joined Real Madrid from Inter Milan in 1996 and played there for 11 seasons. During his time at Real Madrid, he played 584 matches in various competitions and scored 71 goals. During his time at Real, he won four La Liga titles and the UEFA Champions League three times. Marca included him in their “Best Foreign Eleven in Real Madrid’s History” in April 2013. He is one of the rare players who has made more than 1,100 appearances in his professional career, both at club and international level.
Roberto Carlos first played for the Brazil national team in 1992. He participated in three World Cups and was instrumental in taking the team to the final in 1998 in France. Additionally, he played a crucial role in securing victory in the 2002 tournament held in South Korea and Japan. He was chosen to be part of the FIFA World Cup All-Star Team in both 1998 and 2002. He gained particular fame with Brazil for his impressive 40-yard free kick against France during the first match of the Tournoi de France in 1997. He has made the third-highest number of appearances for his national team, with a total of 125 caps. In a FIFA poll conducted in 2002, he was selected for the FIFA World Cup Dream Team.
In June 2013, he decided to pursue a career in management and was appointed as the manager of Sivasspor in the Turkish Süper Lig. He stepped down from his position as head coach in December 2014. He worked as the manager of Akhisarspor from January to June 2015. Roberto Carlos retired from playing at the age of 39 in 2012. However, in July 2015, he took on a new role as player/manager for the Indian Super League club Delhi Dynamos. During his time there, he made three appearances for the team.
