As a player, Skiles was known for his skills as a point guard. He played college basketball at Michigan State University, where he set the NCAA record for assists in a single game with 30. This record still stands today. Skiles was selected by the Milwaukee Bucks in the first round of the 1986 NBA Draft and went on to have a 10-year career in the NBA, playing for teams such as the Bucks, Indiana Pacers, Orlando Magic, Washington Bullets, and Philadelphia 76ers.

After retiring as a player, Skiles moved into coaching. He began his coaching career as an assistant coach for the Phoenix Suns before becoming the head coach of the Chicago Bulls in 2003. Skiles had a successful stint with the Bulls, leading them to the playoffs in three consecutive seasons from 2005 to 2007. He was known for his emphasis on defense and discipline.
