Ghanaian Antoinette Owusu, who resides in Germany, has disclosed that her ex-husband filed for divorce from her as a result of her family’s absence from his father’s burial.
In a conversation with DJ Nyaami on SVTV Africa, Antoinette revealed that his ex-husband’s family had advised him to get a divorce because her family had not provided the anticipated support for the funeral rites of her father-in-law.
According to tradition, her ex-husband’s family should have formally informed her family of their father’s passing. However, they failed to do so, and Antoinette’s family assumed they were not desired at the funeral.
“My father is a chief, so these things are very important. If you don’t invite them, they can’t come. Even during the one-week observation, they didn’t tell my family about it, but I talked them into attending it.
So when it happened the second time, it meant they didn’t want us there. In tradition, it shows disrespect. My ex-husband told me that his family says he should divorce me because of that,” she said.
Miss Owusu further stated that her husband was unable to attend the funeral due to family obligations. Although Antoinette admitted that their union was imperfect, she thinks he really wanted a divorce and only used the imperfection of their union as an excuse.
“For almost ten months, he denied me sex. Nothing happened before that. He vacated the bedroom because he didn’t want more kids. We only have a child together, but he has two with another woman,” Antoinette added.
